It feels good to be organised

Many years ago I put a sign up in my home office that read “It feels good to be organised.” A few weeks later a friend dropped round and caught sight of the sign and laughed out loud at me.

In one sense he was dead right, the office was a mess, and it certainly looked (and was) far from organised.

It would have been easy to be knocked back by that, to simply agree and take down the sign. But I didn’t, I merely laughed it off and here’s why you should too.

Because to go somewhere different, somewhere where you are not right now, then you have to be prepared to be laughed at. You also need to accept that:

You don’t start at your destination

You start where you are right now, and that may be a long way from where you want to go, but you get there one step at a time.

The Beatles didn’t start out playing stadiums; and they got turned down by multiple record companies and played gig after gig to get to where they wanted to be.

Many of the biggest companies in the world start from a bedroom, a garage or a teenagers bedroom in their parents house.

It doesn’t matter where you start from, it matters where you are going and you get there one step at a time.

Today my wife and I still put signs up around our house, we work on being clear on where we’re going, why we’re going there and the strategies we’ll use to get there.

Where are you going in your business, what steps do you need to take to get there? Leave me a comment below I’d love to hear where you’re going and what steps you’re taking.

  • Terry Williams says:

My problem isn’t that I’m not prepared to be laughed at. As a comedian, I’m sometimes unprepared not to be…

I certainly related to the signs next to behaviour directly contradicting the sign. Aargh.

  • Thanks for the reminder Andrew that we don’t start at our destination! Roberta is right – it’s all about the journey! Signs around the house are great – I have a lovely vision board laminated in my bathroom – it motivates me every morning and I have positive affirmations that I read every day along with completing my gratitude diary. They are all reminders of where I am headed, and how far I’ve come, but most importantly that today is the only time I am in control of and to make it count!

  • The journey is what counts and sometimes you have switch backs to move forward. Keep the signs up. Love the concept
