It was 12 years ago when everything was going great. I had an amazing job that I loved – working in a high paying job with a Web Development company, I was just 1 month out from marrying the love of my life (Kim) and everything in my life was amazing. I was on such a high with everything falling into place.
Then a wrecking ball came through and destroyed it all in front of me in just 5 short minutes……
I went to work as happy as could be that faithful day, and everything seemed to be going as normal when I got called into a meeting room by my bosses. That’s when it all changed – I was only in there for about 5 minutes but it was one of the most life changing moments of my life.
I got made redundant – lost my job.
That moment felt like the world had come to an end for me. You see, this came completely out of the blue. Sure the dot com boom had just burst and the industry was going backwards fast, but we had a great company and I was one of the top developers in the company.
I truly thought that I was indispensable….. the company however had to make drastic changes to survive and getting rid of me (as well as many of the other employees) was one of those drastic changes that they felt they had to make.
So that day I was left broken, in shock and looking down the barrel of a bleak future.
Kim and I were just 1 month away from getting married. Kim was studying at University full time and I was the sole bread winner for us. We had a wedding to pay for, a new house to move in to and suddenly no income coming in – with little chance of getting a new job in an industry that had just been almost destroyed.
Things certainly weren’t looking good as we struggled to get through this challenging time….but out of the rubble came a few small miracles that meant that we kept our heads above the water (just!)
I got made an offer from someone I knew that meant that I could set up my own business and earn some money still in the I.T. industry doing what I loved.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing from there but it was the start of my love with owning my own business.
Kim and I got married as planned in a beautiful April ceremony.
It’s amazing to see that being made redundant was actually one of the most perfect things that could have happened.
If that didn’t happen then I probably wouldn’t be doing what I am doing today, and the thousands of people that we have already helped to transform their businesses would not have received my help.
Kim and I regularly (on a weekly basis at the moment) get emails and calls from clients saying how thankful they are for us and how we have changed their lives, and the reality is that this wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t get made redundant that faithful day 12 years ago.
It’s always a good thing to remember that in those most challenging times in your life, where you are pushed to your limits and don’t feel that you can get out, that you will look back on it in 5, 10 or 12 years and be so thankful that those challenges happened to you because something amazing came out of it.
