In 2002 I had a highly paid professional career, was about to marry the love of my life and was absolutely on top of the world. When suddenly it all came crashing down around me.
I lost my job.
Worse than that I couldn’t find a new one, with my fiancé at University I was to be the breadwinner. Things looked bleak so I jumped at the first opportunity I saw – starting a business (not the smartest of moves when your industry is going backwards!)
I wish I could tell you I was an overnight success…
I wasn’t.
In the second year of business we almost went under and were struggling to keep body and soul together. It was then that I started pouring my attention to business, and what makes a business successful and more importantly profitable (it turned out that much of what I’d learnt at University, wasn’t that helpful in the Real World).
Though synchronistic twists of fate I meet my first Millionaire Mentor, someone who took me under his wing and showed me what he’d learned in over 20 years in multiple businesses.
I turned that business around, and turned it into a great lifestyle business for Kim and I, and life was great.
Which is all a bit simplistic – what did we actually DO, what did we focus on to make these changes? There’s lots that we changed and looked at, business models, marketing, sales BUT there’s one key skill I’m going to talk about in this post.
The ability to adapt to change.
There have been plenty of ups and downs since then and one key skill that has helped immensely is being able to change and adapt with the changing world we live in. Markets shrink quickly, and markets that never existed explode overnight thanks to the power of the Internet.
So here are 4 tips to adapting more quickly and easily to change
1) Accept it.
Don’t try to pretend it’s not happening or stick your head in the sand, accept that this is the new reality. Now I’m all for creating your own reality and bending reality to what YOU want, but first you need to accept what is real right now – before taking action to create the reality you want.
2) Prepare for it.
Don’t let change surprise you, expect it and be ready. One of the largest companies in the US in the early 1900’s was a buggy whip manufacturer – fast forward 20 years and that company was gone because they didn’t prepare for change. Change is coming quicker and quicker thanks to our technology so be prepared for the changes and lead the charge – and reap the rewards this brings.
3) Go with the Flow
A sailor doesn’t fight the wind or the conditions, he or she works with them to achieve the result – get to the end destination. In the same way take advantage of how markets are flowing to achieve the results you want in your business.
4) Keep Going
It can be easy to get discouraged in business, sometimes it feels like you’re going backwards at such a rate of knots there’s no way out – don’t give up. Take steps forward (no matter how small) and keep your eyes on the end goal.
