Change is inevitable. It is part of life and is part of every business. However, there is a big difference in when and how changes are made as to what the outcome will be. How easy those changes are to implement and how effective the results will be are also dependent on when and how you make those changes.
So, when is the best time to make changes to your business?
The best time to make changes is when things START to become out of balance, but this is not when we would normally make changes!
Usually when things start getting a bit wobbly or heading downhill, we wait. We can bury our head in the sand and ignore the problems that are gradually getting bigger because they “aren’t that bad”. Or we can turn away and adopt the attitude of “it’ll be right mate”. But this is exactly when you want to be looking at them! This is the best time to adjust and fix things because it takes way less effort, and you avoid a lot of pain and struggle along the way.
Let me ask you a question…
Would you rather make lots of little tweaks often to grow a thriving business or wait till you must make major changes when things hit a crisis point?
Add on top of that the pain, hardship and stress that comes with hitting a crisis point, and I certainly know which one I would prefer!
Here’s an example of this in action…
Last week after an amazing family skiing and boarding holiday in the South Island (NZ), my right hip didn’t feel right. I could feel that I had twisted my pelvis during our holiday, and it was feeling out of place. It wasn’t causing me much pain or stopping me from doing anything, but it was feeling “not right”. I could have ignored it and pushed through any uncomfortableness until it got bad enough that I was forced to do something about it (a crisis point).
Instead, I went and saw my chiropractor at his first available appointment and within 20 minutes he had gently got my whole body back in alignment. YAY! Now I feel on top of the world and discovered that my body was struggling with my hip being out way more than I had realised. The solution was quick, simple and easy, which would not have been the case if I left it to get worse.
I could have gone weeks or even months without doing anything about it, but what would be the true cost of that…
- How much energy would I have lost because of that?
- How much less productive would I have been in my business?
- How much less resilient would I be to everyday stress?
- How much more pain would I have?
Potentially quite a bit, from what started out as just a little “niggle”.
Now let me give you a business example…
I currently have a client whose monthly turnover has dropped a bit for the last 2 months. This got picked up in our last session and we very quickly got to the root cause of why this was happening. She now has a few tweaks to implement, and her income levels will return. She will be back to growing her business again in no time, instead of stressing that things are going downhill. If left unchecked, this “niggle” would have likely worsened, and she would have experienced significant challenges over the next few months; creating much more work for her to fix the growing problem.
This is one of the many benefits of having an experienced business coach, they can pick up on small issues that need adjusting before they turn into a disaster, and before you may even see them!
It is so much easier to fix things that aren’t working quite right, rather than having to deal with major challenges because the little “niggles” got left and ignored.
We really need to let go of the struggle and start embracing more ease in our lives and businesses. It doesn’t have to be so hard all the time.
So, is now the time for you to let go of the struggle?
Take some time in the next week to assess every area of your business. How is everything running? What is the cashflow like? How are your processes working? Do you have a steady stream of leads and clients?
If there are big problems. It is most likely time to make changes.
If things are not working as efficiently as they could. It is probably time to also make changes.
Don’t be afraid of change. Even when it is uncomfortable and requires you to make some hard choices. Embrace it. Your business and life will thank you for it.
Here’s to you creating your own amazing business!
Much love,
Kim.
