It's Not about the Numbers

When I’m working with or talking to business owners about their marketing and we’re talking about getting enough clients for their business often at some point in the conversation they drop in the line “it’s a numbers game, I will get there in the end, I just need to get in front of more people” or something to that liking.

The number of times I’ve had people tell me this is ASTOUNDING!

Let me tell you that this is a LIMITING BELIEF that will hold you back and make you work way harder and longer than you need to.  Plus you will get lack lustre results with this thinking and will not be building a long-term sustainable business, because you will ALWAYS have to get in front of a large numbers of people to sustain your business with this belief going around in your head.

And of course in order to do that you need lots of either TIME or CASH to make that happen, of which most small business owners do generally have a lot of either of those things!  Which then leads them to getting stuck and unable to find a way to move forward in their business, often leading to the slow (or fast) decline of the business.

If you are in this position, or have this belief that it is a numbers game then I have great news for you.  It is simply a limiting belief that is not true and can be shifted, leading to better results for you and your business.

It is not about the numbers or quantity of people that you are reaching or making your offers to, it is more about HOW you are reaching people and WHO you are making your offers to.

Numbers are important, don’t get me wrong, if you want a thriving business then you do want to be reaching a decent number of people with your message and offers, but running around trying to hit “targets” and reach “x” number of people in order to make a sale is not going to be taking the most effective action in order to get you new clients.

This approach can waste a lot of time and cause massive frustration as there is so much wastage in the method.

I spoke with a business mentor a few years back that I was considering hiring to help me take my business to a new level of growth and he told me that I had to make 100 cold calls a day in order to get my business to where I wanted to be.

I didn’t like that idea, it wasn’t a fit for me, and I knew that wasn’t the only way to do it, it was the way he knew and did business and that is fine, but it didn’t resonate with what I wanted to create in my business and how I wanted to do it, so I didn’t hire him.

I found another way that worked better for me and what I wanted to create.

If you could talk to or reach 1/10th the amount of people that you are now and get a better result in your business then would you want that?

If you do, instead of focusing on the “numbers” and how many more people you “need” to talk to in order for you to get a sale, focus on how you can talk to the best quality people… the ones that really need or want what you have to offer.

Here’s a great question to ask yourself…

“How can I get in front of a group of my ideal clients that are ready and willing to buy?”

Now that doesn’t mean no work will be involved in making that happen, but I can tell you that you will get a much better result doing the work to find those people than just trying to get your message out to the masses and as many people as you can.

“When it comes to marketing focus on the quality of the person
you are reaching not quantity”

There is a lot less work involved in getting a new client when they already know they need or want what you are offering, and when they are an ideal match to be your client.  Otherwise you can spend huge amounts of time and effort trying to convince them they need what you are offering.
