How to survive in business during times of massive uncertainty?

How do we as SMEs do business in times of such massive uncertainty?

We are experiencing some very interesting and unknown times right now and it is easy and understandable to feel a raft of emotions.

So is there anything we can do about it?

Yes! There are always things that we can do to make difficult situations better. But what?

That is going to depend on your specific business and situation as to what you can do to improve what is happening, but there will always be things that you can do so smooth out the blow or even ensure you thrive during this time.

Life is changing at a rapid pace right now, so is the business world. Our plans need to be fluid and massively adaptable in order navigate this time with more ease.

Do you need to pivot and offer new services/products or do you need to change the way you are doing business? Is there a way you can do business entirely online if you aren’t already? Or do you need to make a plan to bring in a completely different stream of income right now?

Any plans you created at the beginning of the year, need to be reviewed and reworked. Things have changed. The world has changed. How the world will work in the future could be completely different to how it was working in the past.

People are dying, a virus is spreading, businesses are having to shut down, jobs are being lost without warning, people are in lockdown, and the future has massive uncertainty in front of us.

We don’t need to go into panic (the more we can stay out of that the better!), this too shall pass, but we do need to be aware and sensitive to what is going on. We also need to be proactive in our lives and businesses.

For some businesses they will thrive during this time. I already have clients that are experiencing a massive boost in revenue because of it. For a lot of businesses sadly they will have to close.

We need to take action in order to keep our businesses alive. Stopping and waiting to see what happens could be incredibly detrimental.

I do want to point out that this isn’t just about us and looking after ourselves, this is about helping the entire situation.

If your business is continuing, then that is bringing in money for you and your family. It is also bringing in money to pay your staff and suppliers. It also means that you can purchase goods and services off other businesses and help to keep them going. You could donate time and money to those that are really struggling if your business bringing in a steady stream of income, and be a force for good in these challenging times. The more people who are working through this time the better for us all.

So now is the time to make a plan and start following through. The plan probably will change regularly. Be adaptable and stay in a place of possibilities…

“How can I improve this situation?” “What can I do?”

Instead of getting caught up in hopelessness and thinking that nothing can be done. There are always choices. There are always opportunities. It is up to YOU to utilise them.

I’ve had a number of people reach out for help in a state of hopelessness not seeing anyway forward and I’ve shown them a number of possibilities of how they can turn it around. They have been blown away at simple solutions that they didn’t even see and are excited to be moving forward and making changes.

So I’ve opened up some time in my schedule for a limited number of one-on-one calls with me to work through a business strategy to help business owners during this time.

I’m not interested in getting caught up in the doom and gloom, yes this will be an incredibly challenging time for many, but let’s work together to find solutions and lift us all up.
